  Not much is known about Guzma's past, other than him and the professor Kukui definitely had some things going on. They were friends, and at one point, way more than that. But all good things have to come to an end, as did theirs, and the surface value is believed to be because of Guzma's attitude and personality, as well as his distaste for how Alola was run, and his destructive streaks that often put them both in hot water.
  
  But, some say maybe it wasn't even Guzma's fault..
  
  He is known to be a champion in battling and a master of the Bug-type. To quote one of his grunts, he 'never got a Z-Ring to handicap himself because he was already too strong.' Hand-in-hand with this, Guzma is the proud owner of a wall of trophies from winning various battle competitions. This is how he would meet Plumeria, a punk rocker who would eventually end up leading as the big sister of Team Skull later. The two seem to be pretty tight even today.

  Actually, Guzma's past is a lot more complex than that. At one point in his life, he was an aspiring young kid with a lot of talent and took a lot of pride in what he did. He took part in battle competitions and boosted his abilities. He was a good kid who didn't get into much trouble at all and was otherwise a well-behaved child who just wanted to undergo the trials and one day make it to the title of Bug Captain or a big Kahuna.
  
  Alas, all good things had to end. Nobody respected him. Nobody took him seriously. Nobody acknowledged the talent that he had. He always sought out validation from others, especially adults, and of those, absolutely zero saw how strong he was. Or the potential that he had to grow.
  
  His dad was the worst offender. In his eyes, anything less than gold wasn't worth his time and neither was a son that could never reach it. One of the trophies on Guzma's nightstand is a victim of this mindset, having been cracked in two. His dad was known to have temperamental issues and anger problems that, unfortunately, were often times taken out on this aspiring young trial-goer.
  
  From cheerful kid to trouble-making gang member, it's hard to believe that he ended up in the position he is now--with a distaste for how the trials were run to an adamant personality and his trust wrongly placed in 'the only adult that's ever seen how strong he was'. At the end of all things considered, he was still the leader of a band of rejects.
  
  So what happen? The worst were when he failed as trials; he never heard the end of it. Sometimes the game-winning clubs were used, because maybe then, he'd try harder. Do more. Do better. Stop letting him down. All their kid needed to know was that strength made the man. And he inherited his dad's anger problems. But not by DNA; but because anger had become such a common output in his household, it became normal for him to accept that thrashing about and causing problems was completely normal and acceptable.
  
  He even thrashed out to his dad one day, and that was a fight that never got settled. Guzma ran off when it was through; mirroring his father's teachings. Instead of letting himself get beat up, he would be the one doing the beating. Enough was enough. Even the calmest kids can become troublesome and violent when they're pushed to their limits.
  
  And he hasn't been back to his parents' house since.
  
  PS: he has scars from when his dad beat him with one of his own trophies. this is around when he met nanu; he was estimated between 11-13 years old.
